How Business Development and Gardening are Related.

Download this Post

As it relates to business? Turns out - quite a lot.

First of all, the picture above represents the end results of hard work (if not back-breaking work), sweating under inclement weather conditions, big expenses, and maintenance throughout the growing season. So what does it take to have a flourishing garden? Lets break it down together

and draw the similarities to business development.

*The Basic Steps to a Beautiful Garden*

Plan it Out: begin with the end in mind

What do you Want to Achieve? fruit for food/flowers for esthetics - needs & wants

Establish a Budget: calculate the costs - limit unexpected expenses

Annuals/Perennials or Both? products/services or both?

Starting a business is much like starting a garden. You really do need to begin with the end in mind. What do you visualize, what are your aspirations, what is your budget, what should you include, and why are you doing it in the first place? These core questions really help to get you "grounded".

For those who have been in business for a while, your questions might be different. Questions like; did the plan we had, in the beginning, come to fruition? If not, did we change and pivot the best way we knew how? Did we realize our aspirations, stick to our budget, and diversify along the way? How did we handle the weeds? Did we use organic products or chemical aids to help it grow? Did we read the instructions when applying these products? Did we consider the direction of the sun and position the plants in direct proportion to their individual heat tolerance?

Turns out that gardening is actually a great analogy for business development. Starting with the hard work of rototilling the ground, planting the seeds, watering and weeding along the way, and the best part of all - harvest time...the reward for all your hard work! Until next season of course.
