Inspire Your Success - The Power of Visualization

Making Your Vision Your Reality

Do you remember a time when writing your goals down was enough to achieve them? All you had to do was write down what you wanted, put them in order of priority, and just check in monthly to see how you were doing. And while that seemed to be sufficient, more structure and accountability were needed, and thus "Smart Goals" were coined. This mnemonic acronym encouraged us to build structure and give credence to our goals, and thereby held us accountable for the outcomes. The theory was that if all our goals were specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timed, then our chances of success would greatly multiply.

Although not new, the art of visualization emerged to be the biggest factor in realized outcomes or lack thereof. Various references to athletes using visualization techniques and imagining winning the race were not just pop culture or the latest fad but were backed up by scientific proof that the practice actually affected the body in ways that seemed to defy logic. It appeared that the body responded the same way when they were visualizing running the race as it would if they were actually running the race. These findings validated the power of visualization and the power of our thoughts.

Have we ever tried this practice for our business? Have we ever taken the goals off the paper and out of the business plan, and visualized what we really want? There are many examples of those who have done exactly that and within a period of time, things started to align for them. What if you never visualized or meditated before, how would you get started, and what might you need to know? According to the EOC Institute, there are specific areas in the brain that when activated can produce an altered state of awareness. In this optimum state of mind, your visualizations start rewiring your subconscious mind, much like installing a new software program.

While there is a plethora of resources and advice on how to visualize the desired outcome, one thing is consistent - be consistent. This is a practice you should implement daily so that the feelings associated with the outcome are predominant. Then a little-known mechanism called your reticular activating system becomes alerted to opportunities all around you. An organization called Better Up has great advice on what, where, why, when, and how you should visualize. They also emphasize the benefits of having a vision board and little reminders around you so that these ideals are top of mind. According to their research, here are some techniques to get you started:

Write goals down in detail,  Imagine how you'll feel, Take action everyday, Expand your knowledge, Rehearse the outcome
